3 eggs

6 cups of milk

2 cups heavy cream

2 cups bourbon

1 1/2 cups sugar

2 teaspoons nutmeg

4 beef bouillon cubes

1 beef bone for garnish

In a large bowl and using a mixer, beat the eggs, sugar for approx 2 minutes (you want the mixture to be firm and the colour of butter). In a separate bowl, dissolve the bouillon cubes with a small amount of warm or hot water. Add to egg mixture.
Very slowly, add in the bourbon - just a little at a time.
When bourbon have been added, allow the mixture to cool in the fridge (for up to 6 hours, depending on how long before your party you’re making the eggnog).
30 minutes before your guests arrive, stir the milk into the chilled yolk mixture.
Stir in 1+ 1/2 teaspoons ground nutmeg.
In a separate bowl, beat the cream with a mixer on high speed until the cream forms stiff peaks.

Gently fold the cream into the egg mixture.
After ladling into cups, garnish with a beef bone.

Serves: 8.

Consider substituting shrimp bouillon or shrimp base for the beef bouillon for the less popular but nonetheless tasty shrimp nog. For this, you may garnish with shrimp tails or even crab claws.

I just got a gift in the mail from somebody that I didn’t expect a gift from. Now, I’m...

I just got a gift in the mail from somebody that I didn’t expect a gift from. Now, I’m in a Larry David-esque situation, where I know the socially correct thing to do is to reciprocate and buy them a gift, but I always feel kind of threatened into niceness this time of year. Even worse, since it’s nearly Christmas already, it will be difficult to get them a gift in time, so I just come out of it looking like an ass. Yay! I heart Christmas. I heart fake thoughtfulness too.

Gift giving at Christmas comes in two flavors. The first is genuinely heartfelt, warm and fuzzy giving. The other flavor, the one I will focus on here, is giving out of a sense of obligation and forced neighborliness. People give out all kinds of stupid cheap presents that no one wants because they think they have to, but the recipient of these things just throw them away or put them in their garages, never to be seen or used again until they can give it away the next year. In the end, we’re just trading money. Or worse yet, trading candles or clearance tea sets. I want the gift giving run amok to stop. I just want to get a few people presents and I don’t want to feel like an asshole if I don’t give every co-worker a nice pen or a coffee cup. I don’t want their coffee cups or pens, so why the hell are we doing this?

Because reciprocity is a fundamental building block of human relations. By giving away pens and coffee cups, I am not showing my acceptance of a cultural tradition, or my belief in Jesus. What I am actually doing is showing others that I am not free riding. That’s all it comes down to. Christmas is the perfect season for moochers. Every year, douchebags rake in the goods while doing the absolute least bit of work and spending (which is often zero). We hate them for it. We secretly despise them and think they are cheap bastards. But we say stupid things like, “But I like to give presents more than I like getting them!” so that we look like likable angels when in fact, we are pissed that we spent over a hundred dollars on gifts for co-workers, neighbors and distant friends and got squat in return. Christmas is a game. If both co-operate, then the holiday stays alive. Free riding defectors ruin it for others by gaining in the short run, but risk not getting anything the next year. I think we should all defect. We should all stop giving and expecting gifts from acquaintances and co-workers. Concentrate on giving to those people that really mean something to us. If nothing else, just to screw Wal-Mart.

Today is the Winter Solstice! UPDATE - Language Map of Europe for Twitter...

geocrusader80:

UPDATE - Language Map of Europe for Twitter users…According to this map, it looks as the users of Twitter tend to be located around major transportation infrastructures.

“Western Europe glows bright in the Twitterverse as the most linguistically diverse section of the world. Switzerland is a mix of blue (Italian), red (German), and purple (French), with some light blue (Dutch) shadings. Lime green (Catalan) emerges in northeast Spain. Twitter use seems to peter out in Europe somewhere east of the Czech Republic, but the service looks to be pretty popular in Moscow as it is lit up in teal (Russian).”

http://www.theatlanticwire.com/global/2011/11/worlds-languages-according-twitter/44690/

This update has the language legend on the left.

“I really liked these maps both for their cartography but also for their demonstration that linguistic and national borders can be seen online as well. There has also been a tendency for fine scale mapping of Twitter data so it is nice to get a global perspective.”

http://owni.eu/2011/12/09/the-best-maps-of-2011/

“Particularly relevant to Spain is the dominance of yellow Catalan over pink Castilian in Catalonia, a fact which clearly illustrates Spain’s multilingual nature, and the centrality of language to Catalan identity.

The closeness of the modern world presents a clear motive for language-learning. When we have the means of global communication, why allow language to remain a barrier? As far as this concerns me, I find Fischer’s map genuinely inspirational: comparing the overlapping linguistic boundaries of continental Europe with the linguistically homogenous, grey UK makes me more determined than ever to dedicate myself to learning languages, in order to embrace the modern international identity.”
